From volunteer to employee: Stepping stones at HPHH

UPDATE: Since this article was originally posted, Kerryn has commenced with HPHH as a Program Trainer at Dakabin. We are so stoked to have her as a part of our team!

With an aspiration of gaining experience working with vulnerable people and handling animals, Kerryn joined HPHH as a volunteer about 4 months ago. In a short time, Kerryn has gained a wealth of experience working with people and animals, including her favourite animal: dogs.

“I love how faithful they are to their owner and how they always deliver unconditional love to you, no matter the situation,” Kerryn says.

Kerryn enjoys watching the participants grow and come out of their shells in such a “warm, loving environment”. In her time at HPHH, Kerryn is proud that she also gained the confidence to able to talk to the support workers and participants. As a result, she landed her dream job as a support worker which is very exciting.

“I feel since (volunteering with) HPHH, I have gained lots of confidence working with vulnerable people and have learnt how to make meaningful connections with them,” she says.

“HPHH makes me feel so happy. This is because it is such an amazing program that not only benefits the animals so much but also all the humans involved!”

Reflecting on her experiences at HPHH, Kerryn says her most memorable moment to date involved a dog with trauma on its recovery journey.

“(I remember) watching a very terrified dog build enough trust with a participant over the space of two sessions that the next time they did in-pen work with this dog, it felt comfortable enough to fall asleep on the participants’ lap,” she says.

This is one of many examples of the deep impact HPHH participants have on the rescue animals. Animals with trauma may need time to learn to trust humans again, and this is a beautiful example of that in action.

At HPHH, we rely on the community and goodwill of volunteers. It is people like Kerryn and her involvement in our community that allows us to continue supporting isolated Australians and rescue animals. In return, she experiences the rewarding moments of making a difference in both animals' and participants' lives. Kerryn’s dedication showcases the profound positive impact animals can have on individuals, regardless of their circumstances.  If you share a love for animals and a passion for helping people, volunteering with HPHH is an incredible opportunity to contribute to a program with immense potential and commitment.
