How Nina found her calling to help people and animals

Born and raised in the country town of Cessnock, tucked away in the Hunter Valley, Nina always knew she wanted to work with animals. From a young age, she started pet sitting and studying anything animal-related she could.

After completing Animal Care and Vet Nursing certificates, she was in her element when she started working with the RSPCA. Noticing people from the NDIS coming through the shelter regularly, she always went out of her way to spend extra time with the groups by bringing them in a puppy or kitten to play with. They were always grateful for her time, and she saw the human-animal bond in action.

These interactions sparked another interest in Nina. While still working at the RSPCA, she completed a disability course and a work placement in the industry. On the fence about moving into the disability sector as her love of animals had not waivered, her passions collided when she saw that HPHH was about to launch at the RSPCA in Hunter. It was like a dream come true.

“I quickly sent my resume, cover letter, several follow up emails, and here we are nearly 4 years later,” Nina says.

Fast forward to today, Nina is the Team Leader for NSW, TAS and NT. She has spearheaded the growth of HPHH in the Hunter Valley region and formed strong bonds with her participants who, in turn, have formed tightknit relationships with each other. It’s a beautiful community filled with likeminded, passionate people who genuinely care about each other and the animals they work with.

“Seeing smiles on everyone's faces every day and watching participants grow in confidence, as well as watching animals grow in confidence in the safe space of new people is my favourite. And after so many changes in the Hunter locations, still having participants and volunteers that started with us on our first day warms my heart,” Nina says.

“Helping facilitate positive interactions with people and rescue animals is a dream come true! Creating strong relationships between the participants, staff and partner organisations is amazing to be a part of. Another favourite is working with the rescue animals and seeing them get adopted and celebrating it with our team.”

While Nina has a ‘soft’ spot for big dogs - particularly Border Collies, Greyhounds and Great Danes - she says she also loves Orcas.

“Orcas are misunderstood creatures that are so emotionally intelligent, swim all day and love their family and friends unconditionally. Blackfish is a must watch!” she says.

Moving from her small country town to Newcastle with her big sister, Nina is an integral part of the HPHH pack. Her bubbly personality and beautiful way with the participants and animals in the shelter make her truly one-of-a-kind.

In her downtime, she loves to binge watch TV shows, go to concerts, listen to music and spend time with her friends and family. Her favourite quote of all time is: “do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life”. It’s safe to say she follows this advice daily!
