Celebrating our four-pawed friends

National Dog Day happens every year on the 26th of August. It’s the ‘ultimutt’ celebration of our beloved fur-iends, and we, at Happy Paws Happy Hearts, are all here for it—but we’re not running solo. Happy Paws Happy Hearts, Flight Centre, and RSPCA are working together to celebrate this day and bring much-needed love and joy to our furry friends waiting to find their ‘fur-ever’ home.

Why we celebrate National Dog Day

Raising awareness about the number of dogs needing rescue and assistance every year is essential in ensuring all dogs are celebrated and cared for humanely and respectfully. Our canine friends bring us comfort, keep us safe, and work alongside people everyday - from rescue to service dogs - we have a lot to thank our four-legged friends for.

How you can participate in National Dog Day

What can you do to help? RSPCA needs enrichment items to help keep the rescue dogs in shelters entertained and comforted. These items encourage dogs to use their natural instincts and interact with people and each other positively.

This year, we are making tug toys with handles for play and, if you want to level up, snuffle balls to encourage hunting and calm eating behaviours. You can make these enrichment items from objects around the house, including old fleece blankets and t-shirts.

Please avoid anything that can unravel and have long threads, such as sheets, as these can be a choking hazard.

So, pick a project below and get crafty with your family, friends, or work colleagues.

You can drop off your completed dog enrichment items at any Happy Paws Happy Hearts location or RSPCA, and let them know you have made them as part of the National Dog Day campaign.

We know quite a few doggos who will thank you for it and send big licks and puppy breath.
