Journey of Growth – from participant to volunteer
Meet Tally, a wonderful reflection of growth, resilience, and transformation within the Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) community.
Tally first joined HPHH as a participant in 2021, enrolling in the Toowoomba Train Program. At the time, she was navigating anxiety, depression, and PTSD and sought a supportive environment to refocus and rebuild. Through the program, Tally found exactly that—a space where she could connect with animals, gain confidence and develop her independence.
Tally’s journey continued when she progressed from Train to our ‘Explore’ Employment Pathways program. Reflecting on her journey, Tally recalls how participating in the Explore Program gave her invaluable experiences, such as navigating group outings into town and interacting with local businesses as they prepared for work placement.
In 2023, after completing a 10-week work placement with Happy Paws Happy Hearts, Tally had the opportunity to transition from HPHH participant to HPHH volunteer. This shift marked a significant milestone in her personal and professional growth. "I’ve always struggled with confidence and independence, but the programs helped me step outside my comfort zone. Volunteering allowed me to see how far I’d come," she explained.
As a volunteer, Tally plays a pivotal role in supporting both participants and rescue animals. "It's rewarding to be on the other side—knowing I’m part of what makes someone's day better," she said. "Seeing the changes in the participants faces when they relax in sessions is heart-warming," she shared. Her firsthand experience as a participant has made her particularly attuned to the challenges others face, allowing her to connect with them on a deeper level.
Tally's time at HPHH has also equipped her with skills that extend beyond the organisation. Outside of HPHH, Tally works in Administration for her family’s business. Whether it's handling administrative tasks or interacting confidently with new people in new environments, she credits her experience with Happy Paws Happy Hearts in helping her embrace challenges with less anxiety.
Looking ahead, Tally aspires to continue building her skills and hopes to pursue a career in the animal care industry. She’s proud of how she has transformed from a reserved and anxious participant when commencing Happy Paws Happy Hearts to an independent and confident volunteer who inspires others. She is confident that her experience as a HPHH volunteer has set her up with the tools and confidence to successfully transition into a new role in the coming years.
Her advice to anyone considering volunteering at HPHH? “Keep an open mind. It’s a rewarding experience that helps you grow as much as it helps the animals and participants.”
Tally’s journey highlights the incredible impact of programs like those at HPHH—nurturing meaningful connections between people and animals while paving the way to confidence, independence, and a renewed sense of purpose.
