Volunteer Spotlight: Barbara in Darwin
Originally from Germany, Barbara has called Australia home for over 20 years.
A registered Mental Health Nurse, Barbara has worked across Alice Springs and Darwin and is currently working in alcohol and drug rehabilitation services. Her passion for animals is evident—she’s a dedicated wildlife carer and has volunteered at wildlife sanctuaries and vet clinics both in Australia and abroad.
Barbara joined Happy Paws Happy Hearts excited to work alongside people and animals, especially shelter animals in need of a second chance. “I love working with people and animals,” she shared. “This is a great program. It’s such a rewarding way to connect with people who might find social interactions challenging, and it’s incredible to see their faces light up when they’re with the animals."
One highlight for Barbara has been watching the birth of new puppies, then to watch them grow. She has also loved working closely with the team to help train dogs in their pens. “Using mark-and-reward techniques to help dogs stay calm and focused has been so rewarding,” she said. “I’m fairly new to volunteering with HPHH, and I’m looking forward to learning more about the program and the participants."
Barbara has been especially impressed by the @RSPCANT shelter’s caring environment, noting the team’s warmth, friendliness and dedication to improving the lives of animals.
We’re thrilled to have Barbara on board and know she’ll have a fantastic time with our Darwin team!
To Barbara and all our volunteers across Happy Paws Happy Hearts, thank you for your generous time, passion and commitment. Our sessions wouldn’t run as beautifully without your dedication, and we’re so grateful for each and every one of you. 💙
